"I, ah." It isn't an offer Tris expected. Jean clearly needs this, though,
or she wouldn't be standing here asking. "I've been alright for the most
part. I'm certainly willing to keep you company while you drink, but I
can't join you. "
Mostly as a joke, she adds, "Unless I shut myself in Zero, of course. I
can't control my power if I'm drunk. Rosethorn doesn't touch alcohol
either."
Tris hadn't been serious, but Jean startles a soft huff of laughter out of
her when she takes Tris at her word. "We could. There's also the room in
the infirmary that limits power. I suppose either would work."
After a second, she grins and admits, "I've only been very drunk once, when
I was younger. My siblings and I knocked down the abandoned barn we chose
as the location for our experiments with alcohol. I suppose it could have
been worse. Sandry didn't unravel all our clothes by mistake, for
instance. She's a stitch witch." It occurred to her awhile ago how much
more embarrassing that situation could have turned out.
"I got a little drunk the day I was paired with Erskine, since I didn't
have my magic at the time." She was paired with him, and he proceeded to
hide in Scott's cabin and refuse to speak with her for days. Then she read
his file. Eliot brought beer when he came for dinner that night, and Tris
didn't say no.
"I'd feel weird getting drunk in the infirmary." Not that getting drunk is prison is objectively less weird, but it's not where she works.
She can't help but grin at the first story, and snicker at the second. "I can see how Erskine would inspire that. My inmates never drove me to drink, but that's probably a matter of luck more than anything else."
Her smile turns wry. "The rest of the Barge is a different story. But I can...just stop being drunk, if I want to. I didn't realise that, back home." It's a lot safer to experiment here.
"So we lock ourselves in cells?" Tris asks. "I was joking when I
originally proposed the idea, you know."
But she'll do it if Jean wants to. "Let's go, then, and you can talk to me
about the rest of the Barge. Gealach, Chime, Zeph, come along." She
reaches for the basket of snacks for humans and creatures that she has
ready most of the time. She planned on using it the next morning, but it
will do just as well now.

and then her brow furrows. "We could bring some cushions..."
