"One of those big flat ones. Where you can write things on the icing." Hope has never had a real birthday but she still has faded memories of years spent mock-arguing with Tris over types and pretending to groan in despair at whatever terrible pun their dad had come up with to write on it that year.

"That can be managed. And what do we write on a cake for this occasion?" Tris asks. Because however much Clark said he wanted to celebrate, she's still concerned for him.

She's also curious what Hope will say, because she's sure the other girl was at the pub and drinking.

She gives this some serious consideration.

"I'm glad your planet can be saved. I'm sorry that your dad is dead because it's hard since he's a super dick. But you're great." There, a deeply sensitive message and thought out message; that may be slightly shaped by how much Hope had to drink.

Tris snorts lightly. "Alright. Let's get that mixed and in the oven, and I'll let you do the writing once it's ready."

If Clark is going to accept any sort of sympathy and support, Hope's method might have more success.

Hope nods, fully confident in what's normal to put on a cake.

Though, "How do you make icing?"

"There are a few ways to do it. Butter, powdered sugar, and a tiny bit of cream works well enough for our purposes. They all need to be whipped together. There's a machine that does it in the barge kitchens, but I have to do it by hand." ...Then again, Hope's powers may make that easier for her than it is for Tris.

"I can do that. Are there colors? There should be colors. For the writing." It's important. Artistically. Clark makes very artistic drinks.

"I bought a set of good food dyes when we made port last winter. They haven't seen nearly enough use." So yes, Hope, you can have any color your heart desires.

"Good." It's going to be so many colors. All the colors.
